AI Music — The Current Battle
Which brings us to AI music in 2025. The same institutions that sued grandmothers, missed the digital download window, and built streaming royalty structures that benefit themselves more than artists are now leading the moral campaign against AI music generation. Some of their arguments are legitimate. The training data question is real. The displacement concern is real.
But it is worth being clear-eyed about who is driving this campaign, what their actual interests are, and what history tells us about how it will resolve. The labels are not primarily concerned with protecting working musicians, they are concerned with protecting revenue streams and control over who participates in music commerce.
Part Four: What AI Music Actually Democratizes
The Cost of Entry Was Always the Point
For most of music history, making a professional-quality recording required access to a recording studio, which required money, which required either personal wealth or a record deal, which required industry gatekeepers to approve you first. The recording studio was the choke point that enforced the hierarchy.

The Legal Landscape Will Clarify, Eventually
The active lawsuits against Suno, Udio, and other AI music platforms will eventually produce legal precedent.
