The Story
It was 1975. Bell Labs in Murray Hill, New Jersey had a problem. The engineers running telephone switching tests needed somewhere to put their growing pile of equipment, and nobody was handing out real estate. So a systems engineer named John Kordos did what stubborn engineers do. He commandeered a storage closet, bolted some steel angle-iron shelves to the walls at 19-inch intervals, and started stacking equipment.
Nobody approved it. Nobody designed it. The 19-inch measurement wasn't chosen from some grand engineering study. It matched the width of standard telephone relay racks that Western Electric already manufactured, because that's what Kordos had access to. He wasn't optimizing. He was scrounging. The spacing between shelves became what we now call "rack units," each one 1.75 inches tall. That specific number came from the thickness of the steel shelving he used, not from any standard body's recommendation.
The setup worked so well that Bell Labs started replicating it in other locations. Then telco companies copied Bell Labs. Then the early internet backbone operators copied the telcos. The Electronic Industries Alliance eventually codified the 19-inch rack standard in EIA-310, but they weren't inventing anything. They were just writing down what one guy built in a closet without asking for permission, using whatever was nearby.
Every server rack in every homelab, every colo facility, every AWS data center on the planet right now is dimensionally identical to that improvised storage closet. The screws are in the same places. The rail spacing is the same. The units are the same 1.75 inches. Fifty years of global infrastructure runs on measurements a guy picked because that's what the shelf brackets happened to be.
The Hidden Principle
The world standardizes around whoever acts first with enough conviction that other people copy them before anyone thinks to argue. Kordos didn't publish a paper. He didn't form a committee. He built something that worked, and the next guy who needed to solve the same problem just copied his dimensions because they were right there, proven, and already bolted to the wall.
That's how infrastructure standards actually get made. Not in conference rooms. In back hallways, by people solving a specific problem today with whatever they have. The standard comes later, after the copying has already happened so many times that formalizing it is just bureaucratic paperwork.
What This Means Today
Every homelab builder who has ever bolted a $40 patch panel into a cheap 12U wall mount from Amazon is participating in a chain that runs directly back to that closet. The 10-32 screws y'all strip on a Friday night are the same thread spec Bell Labs used in 1975. That's not heritage. That's inertia with better PR.
The principle matters beyond hardware. When you build something functional in your own space, on your own time, without waiting for approval, and other people start copying your setup, you've done the same thing Kordos did. The person who acts and builds sets the template. The people who wait for consensus end up filling in the paperwork that describes someone else's closet.
